Boat license

I have been to Okinawa recently and it was really amazing. However when I wanted to use the jetski they said I need a special boat license. While I was pretty down at that time and thought to myself what a bummer, I got interested into maybe pursuing a boat license. I had seen a YouTuber who is floating with his boat through Tokyo so I imagine there is a lot I can do with that. Not only in Okinawa.

Here’s my problem. When I searched for boat rentals I hardly find anything and oftentimes it’s one of those go-fishing boats with 2hp.

Anyone has general tips or insides onto how to get a boat I can use for cruising?

Edit: thank you for all the replies so far: Do you also know how to actually rent a boat somewhere?

  1. From what I understand, a cruising sized boat license will require a written and practical test which is conducted solely in Japanese (unless it’s changed recently). I’ve no idea the requirements for a jet ski level license though, or even if they’re the same license.

  2. Tests are available in English, but not a lot of study material is. There are three levels: jet ski only, small boat second class, and small boat first class. You need to schedule both the exam and practical separately and at the exam there is a quick vision check. I think it cost me about 4万円。

  3. A friend of mine went to class and got his in the Kobe area…the teacher was a foreigner so the classes were in English….

wife has hers though she never uses it anymore

Tokyo Sail & Power Squadron, they have test prep classes and will step you through the process. Next test is in October so they should be starting another class soon.

They can also put you in touch with people for crewing opportunities, events, etc.

The “Sea-Style” rental service for power boats. This service is available from many marinas in the Kanto area.
