Company sponsored my visa, but I can no longer do the work. Can I switch jobs?

Hope you can help! I have been sponsored for a visa change (instructor to engineering/humanities/international services) by a company but due to personal circumstances I am no longer able to work in that field. I never signed any contract with this company, it was on the provision I completed a training period that I would be offered a role. At this stage I can say I won’t be able to complete the training and I’m worried it will affect my visa status.

Do they have any control over my visa? If I haven’t signed a contract, will there be any repercussions? Immigration was informed about my unemployment initially, and any fees involved in the visa process were covered by myself, so outside of their sponsorship that’s all that’s happened.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: to be clear, I have a Zairyu card issued and picked up, and is valid for another year

  1. No your visa is not tied to your employer however you will need to find a job in the same visa category or have the correct qualifications to change to a different category.

On paper you have about 3 months to land another job but as long as you are actively job hunting via talking with recruiters etc. you should be fine past that timeframe as well.
