Hi everyone, I need to buy a new phone pretty soon. I’m aware that the shutter sound has to stay on as per Japanese law, but I’ll likely be moving back to Canada next year and would rather not have to deal with that noise when I go home. I heard it’s easy to do on the iPhone, but does anyone know if it’s doable on a Pixel or Samsung?

I can confirm it’s not doable on stock Pixel bought here. It should be doable if you install a Canadian rom or via rooting but I haven’t tried.
How do people usually disable it on iPhone? I noticed when I put a Filipino SIM into my Japanese iPhone, the shutter sound went away. Maybe the same applies to your phone?
Have a Samsung galaxy s9 and when I arrived abroad at the airport a message popped up that shutter sound was OK to be disabled now
There is no such law, it is merely a “request” by Japanese regulators.
My Pixel.stopped making the shutter sound when I left Japan. I believe it’s location specific and programmed into the OS so once you leave it should shut off. Can’t remember if I’d swapped Sims or not before I started taking pictures.
It started again once I’d returned.
For all android devices that I know you need to change teh devices system table key ” csc_pref_camera_forced_shuttersound_key ” value from 1 to 0.
