Good ways to get an IC card in east/central Japan

If you’re in the JR East or JR Central (Tokai) areas of Japan near Tokyo and are struggling to get Suica or Pasmo, I just wanted to share this tip.

If you need an IC card, go to Tokyo station. There are 3 or 4 major JR Central ticket counters outside the train gates. One of them has Toica Sales. If you’re near Tokyo and need an IC card, I recommend going there for Toica. It is compatible with the 10 big lines as well, so don’t worry.

If you know other places to get out-of-region cards like this, please share in replies.

  1. This is a pretty wellknown workaround.

It doesn’t work however, if you need a commuter pass. For those who need a commuter pass, it’s easier to just go directly to JR/whoever and get one.

  2. Not trolling, but genuinely curious – why would you need to do this? Suica is available through an application now – I’m in Fukuoka and I basically use it for transport since I like the rechargeable experience.
