  1. Does anyone else have no problems with their laundry? I use a cheap top loader that only uses cold water and my clothes and towels come out clean and not stinky. I see posts here all the time about how people complaining about shitty Japanese top loaders using cold water not getting their clothes clean and I’m sitting here just thinking “???”. I don’t know what I’m doing right. I don’t know if it’s people living by themselves for their first time and their mothers used to do their laundry so they never learned how to do laundry probably or what but I’m a bit confused lol

  2. I will be moving into a new apartment (same ward) this Sunday.

Can I do the city hall/JP mail forwarding changes now or do I have to wait until I physically move in?

I have the new keys and documents, receipts etc. I’ve even dropped off some of my stuff to save trouble.

How bureaucratic are they regarding this?

  3. For those that do the blue sheet declaration form (青色申告), what software do you use or recommend for ? Are there any that happen to have an English interface?

  4. I want to buy two or three separate things from one seller on Mercari and ask for a specific price…but my Japanese is still pretty crap.

So before I use DeepL/Google Translate to do it and for sure mess up keigo, does anyone have a copypaste I could use?

So far I’ve just been using the TokyoCheapo copypaste for single items: コメント失礼いたします。購入を考えているのですが、こちらの商品は◯◯◯◯円にお値下げ可能でしょうか?

  5. Is there any place we can go to get a consultation about the 106万 and 130万 wall stuff? It is too complicated for me. My wife asks me what is better for her future retirement, if she becomes a dependent of me or not and I have no idea.

I didn’t even know it also affects retirement, I thought it was only a tax thing.

  6. over 50% import tax on protein??

Made an order with Myprotein for protein and oats, after the usual discounts, cost is 17,982 yen

Got notified of 9,700 yen import tax to be paid on delivery. Considering just to refuse and return it but not sure if I will incur other costs doing this – anyone done such before?

Pre-discount “value” is 45,792 yen so still 21% tax (or maybe 20% plus Yamato fee)

  7. Can you ship a bag of goods with Yamato or JP Post? I have some big ish items and struggle to find an appropriately sized cardboard box. It’s in a bag though, but I am sending it to a home address (not for travel/airport) so I wonder if it’s possible to send it just in the bag without any box.

  8. I remember hearing in japan for some families they pour their leftover soup back into the pot. I think it is for one of the hot pot style meals. Can anyone confirm or deny?

  9. I’m not crazy right? The counter for hash browns is 枚?

    ハッシュポテト二枚お願いします。

The cashier at family mart acted so confused when I said that it has me questioning everytime I’ve said that.

  10. Any ideas where to go over the extended weekend (Oct 7th-9th)? Been to most of the popular spots already, such as Hakone, Nikko, Kamakura,….

  11. I‘ve been using the same Sakura Sim phone card with Data since I arrived. About 2900 yen per month + 500 for domestic phone calls in the month(don‘t really call often). The data works just fine outside.

So the question is, is there a reason to switch to a different provider now that I can choose whichever one I want?

The most I could think of is if it costed even less, or offered deals for 2 sim cards at reduced prices, but from a bit of searching prices seem about the same elsewhere. Did I miss some great provider I should consider switching to?

  12. Any suggrestions on where to go? I’m in Nara training for a month and have quite a few free weekends I don’t have plans for. I’ve already gone around Nara, Kyoto, and Osaka

  13. When I got into my apartment building this evening, I bumped into my Japanese co-worker, taking out trash. We were both a bit startled at first. I subconsciously whispered, “あ!ざいます…” And then he also whispered back (what I think it was), “あ、こんばんは…” Then I immediately realized and told myself, “Dude, it’s evening.” It was a force of habit, I guess, since I only bump into him and greet him usually in the morning..

I know it was a silly mistake, but do Japanese people find that funny? Or it doesn’t matter at all? And I read somewhere that the morning greeting is also used in the afternoon and evening, in some cases.. How true is it today?

    I’m just curious…

  14. How to use Sagawa tracking? Seriously, the only thing I need is a tracking number, but seller provided me a “slip number” and Sagawa send me a censored unusable tracking number through LINE, where they also have an unusable support bot. How the hell can I track my package, when it did not arrive during the time it should be?

  15. My phone broke so I’m buying a Japanese phone online. I already have a SIM-card so I found a SIM-free phone via the price comparison site Kakaku. On the vendor’s site ([qoo10.jp](https://qoo10.jp)) I have to choose a model; either Docomo or Rakuten model. These are service providers. After selecting one of them (Docomo), it still says it’s “SIM-free” which is what I want. But I’m confused by this – does this mean I will get a phone that is locked for Docomo SIM-cards only or a phone plan with them or something? There is no text specifically stating such conditions anyway. Even on the price comparison site, this SIM-free phone was shown with different service provider models. Is this normal when buying phones in Japan and can I expect a phone to arrive for which I can use any SIM-card (spefically the one I own – GTN which uses the Docomo network.)
