It takes however long the line is at your immigration office since the re-entry permit is given to you the same day. Once you get to the front and turn your paperwork in, it usually doesn’t take too long for it to be processed.
About 1 min to fill out the form. From there a couple of minutes to stand in the line and another couple to talk to the officer.
How long it will take depends entirely on how busy the immigration office is when you turn up. Since you didn’t give any information about which office you will be going to (or even which prefecture you live in), no one can give you any sort of helpful information about how long your visit might take. Some offices might take hours, others might take minutes.
A few points:
1. You can opt for multiple entry or single entry. Single is cheaper but you can use the multiple one repeatedly during the valid period.
2. If you are on a term-limited visa (work, spouse, etc) then the re-entry permit cannot exceed the length of your visa. If your visa expires next year, getting a re-entry permit doesn’t fix that.
3. If you have PR, then you can get a 5 year re-entry permit.
not reentry but it took me 2.5 hours to wait for my turn at the reception desk to reissue my lost zairyu in tachikawa
I walked out with a fresh new card 10 minutes later….
biggest hurdle is filing the application but once you’re in shouldn’t take that long
