Apartment Hell, sharehouse or homestay?

Hello, I’m currently renting a short term apartment with a mold issue (not saying the name for obvious reasons), which made me sick for the past two months to the point where it affected my schoolwork. The apartment managment was very unhelpful. I’m trying to figure out what I should do if I should go for a homestay or maybe a sharehouse.

I had trying to move to another apartment however, it seems that not many apartments will rent to students. I’m also hesitant to commit two years when I don’t know the areas here super well.

I’m trying to figure out what I should do if I should go for a homestay or maybe a sharehouse? If anyone could recommend some good clean share houses preferably close to Shibuya I would appreciate it. Is sharing a bathroom that bad?

Homestay advice would be helpful as well.

I’m frustrated I’m spending more of my time here dealing with apartment drama then studying and enjoying and exploring. Thanks guys

  1. Where are you located? If you’re in and around Tokyo and Yokohama I’d 100% go for a sharehouse. They’re kept to a very good standard and the prices are very reasonable, plus you can meet a lot of people. Have a look here, I’m sure you can find one you like: https://tokyosharehouse.com/eng/

  2. 1. When you sign a contract for two years, that doesn’t mean you have to stay there for 2 years. By law, the longest amount of time you have to give for notice to break a contract is 3 months, and most places only require 1 month. Places with low initial fees also have early check out penalties, usually.

    2. When asking about a sharehouse always find out how many hours per week the place is cleaned by professionals. Also ask about how many toilets and shower stalls there are, and how often they are cleaned.
