Question for software developers and hiring managers!

Hi all! This might be an odd post: I’m seeking some advice about job searching in Japan as a Japanese citizen with somewhat flimsy Japanese language skills, but fluent in English.

I graduated from a university in the US with a master’s in computer science in December of 2022 with a 4.0 GPA. This degree was meant to help me switch careers from a more data oriented role. I also have a bachelor’s in economics from a US university.

I have about 3 years of non SWE, data related experience (analytics/operations) about 6 months of a mix of machine learning (intern) and web development (volunteer) experience, and a few web development and ML projects on github. I’m comfortable with Python, JS, React, Node, HTML/CSS, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and a few other technologies.

I’ve been job searching in the US for close to a year now with no luck so I’m considering heading home. My dilemma is that I’m fluent in English (people can’t tell it’s not my native language), but not fluent in Japanese at a business level because I’ve spent so much time out of Japan (close to 10 years now). Considering my background, how difficult would it be to find a SWE job in Japan? Ideally, I’d love to work in an English speaking environment. Please let me know if there’s any details that would help provide an informed response. Thanks for reading!

Note that it’s easier to get a job while you are already here. That being said it can still be just as challenging as looking for a job there.

In my previous company people who were hired from abroad were sourced through agencies that work with candidates from South Asia and south east Asia. I am not privy to their contract terms just that they exist and I have worked with individuals in such situations.
