Head lice – How to disenfect laundry?

My son has headlice and we need to wash all the laundry and clothes everyday at a high temperature to kill the eggs until we’re lice free. My accomodation only has cold wash machines. Does the standard “Attack” brand detergent kill these? Any tips?

  1. Maybe you can change the temperature of your boiler until you think it’s hot enough to kill them.
Prepare a tub or similar and throw the clothes in there for a bit before washing them in the machine.

  2. If you can find it, get special headlice detergent and shampoo. It smells horrible but it works.

  3. You could also check if your washing machine has a drier function which would heat up the clothes as they dry.

I also recommend hanging the clothes in direct sunlight even after they’ve dried.

I’d vacuum your futons and stick them outside too just to be safe.

  4. If your washing machine has a dryer function that is going to be hot enough to kill them, and if not, take them to the coin laundry and throw them in a hot dryer (after washing at home to remove any live bugs). But they don’t survive long off of the head, so don’t spend all your energy on doing laundry. After using lice shampoo, the best place to focus your energy is on combing the hair with a lice comb daily to remove the eggs. Get a bottle of cheap conditioner and just thoroughly coat their head with it, then comb it out. The conditioner smothers the live bugs and the combing is the only way to remove the eggs. Then blowdry the hair on the highest setting your kid can stand.
