Accepting offer then turning it down for better position

I’ve applied to a lot of teaching jobs in Japan. What would happen if I were accepted by a company that was my last choice (company a) so i accepted their offer, and then I later got a better job offer (company b) and accepted that and turned down company a?

How would that work out logistically if the visa process is already started by company a? Would company b be able to see that i already have a coe in progress and question why? Would it look bad to tell them I cancelled another job offer and that’s why the coe is already in progress?

  1. If you did that to me I would contact immigration and tell them the candidate was no longer seeking employment with us.

  2. Im no expert but picking the option that doesnt involve fleecing immigration would probably be your best bet

  3. According to [this law firm article](https://www.atlo.jp/certificate-eligibility/#rtoc-8), if you have more than one COE application, the COE will not be issued / be denied.

From [this old FAQ from Keio](https://web.archive.org/web/20090724143553if_/http://www.ic.keio.ac.jp/nncenter/jp/160.html#Q2), if duplicate COE applications are made, no COE will be issued.

You must ask company A to withdraw their COE application for you, before Company B begins the application process. If the COE has already been issued to A, it must be returned.

It’s unclear if immigration will reveal the reason why your COE application was not issued/denied; but once that happens, I would think that they would just withdraw their job offer, rather than check in with you and/or wait and reapply for you again.
