Weekly discussion and small questions thread

In response to user feedback, this is a recurring thread for general discussion about learning Japanese, and for asking your questions about grammar, learning resources, and so on. Let’s come together and share our successes, what we’ve been reading or watching and chat about the ups and downs of Japanese learning.

The /r/Japanese rules (see [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanese/about/rules/)) still apply! Translation requests still belong in /r/translator and we ask that you be helpful and considerate of both your own level and the level of the person you’re responding to. If you have a question, please check the subreddit’s [frequently asked questions](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanese/?f=flair_name%3A%22FAQ%E3%83%BB%E3%82%88%E3%81%8F%E3%81%82%E3%82%8B%E8%B3%AA%E5%95%8F%22), but we won’t be as strict as usual on the rules here as we are for standalone threads.

  1. I have a question about Kitsune Masks and where the boundaries are for possibly cultural appropriation and or disrespect.

I am from the United States but enjoy the visuals of Japanese culture, and one of my favorites is the kitsune mask. There is a tattoo design that I saw that drew my attention, of a Kitsune mask that has essentially been broken in half, with a flower growing out of the break.

Would a tattoo of this variety be seen as disrespectful to Japanese culture? If it is I’ll refrain from getting anything along the lines of it, but I just want to make sure before I even get close to making the decision.

  2. 不思議の国のアリスを読んでいる間に、もう紹介されたウサギが「が」をまだ使っていることに気づきました。日本語で、もう知っているトピックに「は」を使いますね。でも、日本語の小説は、キャラクターをもう紹介したら、まだ「が」をよく使いますか。I’m assuming that the particle doesn’t have the purpose of introducing new info here, and it also isn’t part of a dependent clause. ありがとうございます♪

  3. At around 4:10 in the attached video, Tsuchiya san uses the term ” 危険な香り” . I know the literal meaning of the words, but is this a common phrase or idiom in Japanese? I’ve never heard it before.[https://youtu.be/mlaJ3N7AJI4?t=250](https://youtu.be/mlaJ3N7AJI4?t=250)
