MEXT MBA scholarship – career options post graduation

I’m thinking of applying for the MEXT scholarship (there’s a one year YLP for business administration available for my country and it has subjects of my interest such as finance and sustainability). I have around 9 years of work experience in different areas, only around 4 years in finance.

Would doing this MBA course improve my chances of getting a mid -career position in Japan after graduation, or would I get only entry level opportunities because I’ll be considered a 新卒?

  2. Since you have experience you could be considered for mid-level positions OR shinsotsu positions. Your Japanese usually needs to be N2 or higher for most companies (but not all).

If the degree is only one year long, you’d probably be starting your job hunt immediately. That is, unless you start as a research student (most MEXT scholars do). Nevertheless, it’s not a bad idea to start job hunting starting the spring before you will graduate. That’s typically the timeline for shinsotsu job hunting but you can also work something out with companies if you have experience too. I got my job that I will start when I graduate this spring based on previous years of experience and they agreed to let me start after my degree is done, almost a year after my first info session/interview with them. It’s possible. I say, go for the scholarship and see where the path takes you! Good luck!
