What is the best way to get a new debit card once it expires? I haven’t received any communication from the bank (MUFG) and it’s due to expire in November. I’ve had to go back to the US for a few weeks for family stuff, but might not be able to get back before the card expires. From what I have heard they send a new one in the mail? Or do some people go into a branch to apply in person? If so, how long does that take?

I use different banks. Debit cards in Japan are usually sent by recorded delivery. Someone will need to sign for it.
You should go into your bank and explain your situation.
Smart move would be go in now and request a new one.
I got mine by going to the bank (MUFG) and it took about a week (mail) to get it.
Can you call your bank and ask for a new one?
I had a similar situation. My bank told me I have to wait so I asked what if it was damaged? They said if it’s damaged then they can send a new one right away.
they send me a postcard saying they will send it to me in the month of expiration. An they did.
I was an automatic renewal for me. They sent it by mail.
