Chubu to Osaka

Noob question but I am just confused. Planning to get the 5-day Kintetsu Rail Pass as we’ll be landing in and flying out of Nagoya and Shinkansens are expensive. I figured out how to get to Osaka through the Kintetsu line. I know we’ll be purchasing separate ticket for base fare of the limited express trains. I’ve checked the Kintetsu website as well but how do I know if the line is under Kintetsu. We’re planning to check in in Osaka and go to Kyoto the next day and google Maps do not show Kintetsu line. Will the stations show “Kintetsu”? Sorry this might be a stupid question but I just want to maximize the rail pass.

  1. Using Kintetsu you would have to via Ise. Without consideration for the Kintetsu pass, you could do Nagoya-Osaka for about the same time using local JR train than using Kintetsu. Using JR you can do it fo 3410 yen one way.

Sees that Kintetsu pass would not especiall be cheaper, 3700 for the pass plus 1930 for the limited express ticket to Osaka. Quickly I would imagine that going on local JR train would be cheaper, maybe unless you take Kintetsu to go to Nara too.

To know it a line is kintetsu, the route searching yool will show kintetsu in the name of the train, but considering Google does not offer much filters, use Japantravel by navitime instead and use filters to remove shinkansen. Yes some stations show kintetsu, like Kintetsu-Nara, but that is usually only if the station is at a different location (it’s 1km away from Nara station, that is JR). Most of the time there is no Kintetsu on the line name.

  2. It’s roughly 1.5 extra hours each way to go via Kintetsu or JR local vs using Shinkansen from Chubu Airport to Osaka. Its likely not worth using Kintetsu to go from Osaka to Kyoto since it would make a 30 min JR trip into a 2 hr one, unless you were planning to go to Nara as well.

There is also the consideration that the Kintetsu Limited express will be significantly more comfortable than doing JR local (also less changes). Also would depend slightly on where exactly in Osaka you’re staying.

Just to go from Kintetsu Nagoya to Osaka:

Cost for Kintetsu will be 3700 for pass +ltd express (around 4000 total) = 7700

Cost for shinkansen will be around 6000 each way using non-reserved = 12000

Cost for local JR will be 3700×2 =7200
