What’s with those huge roaches?

Just spotted a literally huge very dark roach crawling around my aircon in the bedroom. Mr Bitchbutton killed the roach after he heard me screaming and came to the rescue with roach spray and a piece of cardboard tied together with tape. The roach got a toilet funeral in honor of it’s twin that showed up next to me on a saturday night a few weeks ago at the toilet wall when I was half asleep. Both huge, both very dark colored. Other years we’ve only seen small brown ones. Is this a common sight? They honestly scare me.

  1. One or two big ones implies they came from outside. If you see lots of smaller ones you have an infestation inside your abode – at least that’s local wisdom I’ve heard. My wife grew up in a traditional (old and open) Japanese house in the countryside but screams like a banshee when she sees a “goki-chan”. Fortunately we usually only get one or two a year.

  2. Have a look at the outside unit of your ac. There is a small pipe that allows water/moisture to escape. The roaches are getting in through that.
I wrap a kitchen sink food net around mine. That way, the water can still get out, but the roaches can’t get in. Good luck!

  3. So they’re coming from outside, which is good, and you can fix that, sort of, which is good!

There’s perimeter sprays, which you can spray outside of your home. You’re going to want to go around all the doors, windows, vents, etc, and spray. One or two might still get in, but they’re going to be woozy and you might find them dead or dying. Cool!

There’s also indoor perimeter spray, and you’ll want to do the same thing indoors. If you have pets, you want them to go stay somewhere else for a few days.

Keep your drains closed when you’re not using them. It’s a pain but you don’t want them thinking your place is a good idea. Run hot hot water down your kitchen drain after doing dishes for a few minutes, same for bathing. Keeps the pipes clear and yummy things for bugs from sticking around.

  4. This year, most likely due to the long and hot summer, roaches have had a great old time and have multiplied like crazy. I try to fight them outside the house, before they can even make it in. Last year, I’ve killed 8 over the course of the summer. This year, I’ve killed 18 in a single day and might have reached triple digits overall.

Personally, we have American roaches, which are big (the biggest, if I remember correctly), brown to dark brown and can fly. The second biggest, I believe, are the Japanese roaches, which are black and can also fly. And then there are German roaches, which are brown, small and can’t fly.

By the way, if the roach was near the aircon, then that might have been where it got in. Make sure you have anti cockroach plugs on the water outlet pipes and that the place where the cables and pipes come in is properly sealed.

  5. The picture looks like one I zapped with the spray a few months ago. It was huge made me squeal when I saw it. I’m quite pleased to learn on this thread it probably came from outside. The other thing we have in common is we both fall asleep on the toilet.

  6. I had one of those a few years back. Sprayed the crap out of it and it scurried behind a counter to die. But I didn’t see it die, so I spent hours searching with a very grim fear that it was alive and ready to spawn friends.

I eventually found it dead, but it left in me a strong resolve to just punch the next fucking thing I see rather than wait and hope for a chemical solution. Hand washing is infinitely nicer than the dread I felt then.

  7. Where do y’all live? I was about to fall asleep but this post made me so uncomfortable. I live in Itabashi Tokyo. Should I be worried?

  8. Does anyone know if having a cat would help with these?

EDIT: Oh wait, I remembered we have Google. Here is the top result:

    >Cats don’t run away from roaches; **they will most certainly hunt them down and kill them**.
