Water usage?

How much water do you use every two months?
I have a family of two. We were averaging no more than 40 cubic meters every two months. However in the last two bills a significant more water was used (64 cubic meters). The “water meter lady” has stated a second time, we may have a leak and to contact the landlord again.
Over a month ago, the landlord sent a plumber who couldn’t detect a leak even with fancy high tech equipment.
The landlord chalked it up to higher prices. That doesn’t answer how more cubic meters of water is used.

*Several years ago, a leak was identified and repaired. I was told that leak was releasing about 158 liters every day.

  1. In this case I would probably find a way turn off my water unless I was using it. For now. Then I would tell my landlord that I’m going to call an independent plumber to come out and look for the leak. Call 1, then call another until the leak is found. You can probably argue to your landlord to have them pay for it later especially if one is found and it’s been going on for a long period of time. I’d also request to have my meter replaced.

I’d also track my meter myself. Just to make sure. It couldn’t be that hard to do. I think there’s still a lot you can do here.

  2. How much water are most of you using every two months? What is the cubic meters?
I’m trying to get a baseline of what a two person family uses.

  3. Family of four. We use between 80 and 88 m2 per 2-month period.

We only see large variations if we change our behaviour (e.g. don’t take so many baths/only have showers in summer cos it’s too hot), or go away for a couple of weeks. If you haven’t changed your behaviour, and you’re seeing more than 50% increase, then something is amiss.

  4. Take a picture of the meter before you leave for work. Compare it to the meter when you get home. If there is a leak, you’ll see it there.
