Is selling “untested” items on Yahoo Auction allowed

Hello everyone,

I would like to ask you for some help with Yahoo Auction, because I’m not very good in Japanese.

I see there are a lot of electronics auctions, that show present items as “untested”. My guess is that these items are mostly broken, but people will not buy them if the seller straight out says that. Is it allowed to pretend the item is not tested, even if it’s broken? If I buy such an item and it really does not work, can I have any claims for refund?

No, of course not, that’s the whole point of untested. The seller is saying they haven’t tried to turn on the item. They’re selling it as junk.

  2. They are all very clearly labeled as “ジャンク” (junk) and no returns/refunds/claims. No, if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. You bought it for parts/whatever.

What are you buying (for example) that shows untested? I’ve not seen such labeling except for some very niche items that the seller would have no way to test sufficiently (think something like broadcasting equipment or test & measurement stuff).

  3. Not necessarily broken. But it’s a gamble. Some are junk shops and don’t have time to test. Check the reviews. And understand the risks. I’ve bought things like that, that worked . But one time turns out water damage to pcb. 7k yen wasted.

  4. My rule of thumb is:

    – if it’s “untested” for a very common item that is easy to test, it likely means “broken, but I like to give you hope because that could make the price go slightly higher”

    – if it’s “untested” but requires specific knowledge or material to test (telescope equatorial mounts for instance), then there is more chance

  5. People who have knowledge to fix the items will usually buy ジャンク items because they can repair and flip it or for spare parts. Never buy it expecting it to work.

  6. Untested = broken/for parts/parts missing

You can get lucky, but more than often it’s for parts
