22-Day Itinerary Check

Hey! I’m planning a 22-day trip at the start of next year and was looking for some recommendations based off what I have so far. For context I have been fortunate enough to visit Japan quite a few times (10 give or take) but I will be travelling with my partner who has never visited before. Beppu sounds like an amazing stop and I haven’t really explored Kyushu before + we’ll be visiting family & friends up north in Sapporo.

Days 1 – 4 (Jan 15 – 18)
– Osaka (arrive evening on day 1, so 3 full days)
– Planning on a day trip to Nara + see the Osaka sights.

Days 5-6 (19 – 20)
– Kyoto

Days 7 – 9 (21 – 23)
– Travel from Kyoto back to Osaka to catch overnight ferry to Beppu. I’ve been thinking of doing the onsen rounds and also fitting some hiking in (because I’ve heard that it’s amazing – Mt Yufu?)

Days 10 – 15 (24 – 28)
– Leave Beppu for Tokyo via Oita airport. Travel to Nozawaonsen for skiing.
– Probably will ski for 26-28, visit snow monkeys on 29 before departure.

Days 16 – 19 (29 Jan – 1st Feb)
– Tokyo

Days 20 – 22 (2nd – 4th Feb)
– Fly to Sapporo
– Visit family and friends + the Ice festival on Feb 4.

Final day 5th Feb
– Fly from Sapporo to Osaka (probably mid afternoon) and then late night flight home.

  1. That is quite a lot of hopping around different places, but sounds like a nice itinerary. I personally would have stayed for longer in Kyoto and Tokyo, if I was traveling with someone who hasn’t been in Japan before, but other than that, I like it.

I personally would probably leave Beppu for another visit saving the need for ferry and flight and having more time in Kyoto and Tokyo. But Beppu seems to be really cool, have not been there yet, but definitely is on my bucket list.
