Japnese/foreign company

I want to hear your opinion on merit/demerit working in Japanese or foreign company. I think working in japanese company have good stability, low salary, they wont cut low performer, but I wonder why most of foreigner will leave company after some years.
For foreign company, I believe its more result oriented but flexible, I see that some foreigner leave company after 2/3 years.
Which do you prefer and why?

  1. It can cost a lot of money to change jobs. Those that work in foreign companies may end up in jobs that give them enough income to easily switch jobs on a frequent basis. 2-3 years is the perfect amount of time to switch jobs between foreign companies. Switching jobs is almost always the fastest way to move up in both income and job description in foreign companies.

  2. Staying in the same company is unrewarding, only a comically small amount of companies here in Japan give their employees a regular raise. With job-hopping you can get 15~25% increase every time you hop, so yeah.

Speaking from experience, I left a previous employer for the following reasons:
    – massive difference in work culture and thought processes
    – noncompetitive wages, refusal to increase salary to match market rates. Only offered increase as a counter-offer to other job offers I had.
    – unspoken pressure to not take holidays, personal days & a “work comes first” culture

Have worked for both very foreign & very Japanese entities here, and find that the more foreign ones do a better job of looking after employees / better “office culture”. (Also, often more profitable so better pay and benefits)

  4. You also have to consider that once you have a good position in a foreign company, you may receive regular contact from recruiters with tempting job offers to level up. Large international recruiting companies focus mostly on foreign companies, so there is a lot of demand and interest for bilingual workers. When working for a Japanese company, switching jobs is generally frowned upon, so employees tend to stay much longer.
