Quick question on Yamato TA-Q-BIN?

Hello!

I’m looking to buy a computer part off of fb marketplace from someone. We are both in japan, it’s just a 4 hour train ride.

If the seller sends it via yamato cash-on-delivery,

Will I be allowed to open the package and check the contents before handing over the cash?

What I would like is the right to refuse delivery in the event the contents are damaged, or it was a scam (wrong product). And I don’t know how it works.

Because if I have to hand over the 30000 yen to get the box and it turns out it was empty or a damaged part or the wrong part, I don’t want to just be out of luck.

From yamatos website as a summary, but doesn’t really answer my question:

TA-Q-BIN Compact Cash on Delivery (宅急便コンパクトコレクト) – Deliver package on the next day. The recipient (customer) is responsible for paying product fee + shipping fee + Cash on Delivery (COD) fee.

  1. Typically the drivers are on a schedule.. I would think to open the box ok… but to check it out in detail wouldn’t work

  2. You can’t open the package before you receive the package.

You can’t receive the package before you pay the COD amount.

    So, no, you can’t.

  3. >Will I be allowed to open the package and check the contents before handing over the cash?

Package won’t be in your possession unless you pay the fee/sign the paperwork first.

    > What I would like is the right to refuse delivery in the event the contents are damaged…

You have the right to refuse the package and have it return to sender for any reason **before** you pay/sign the paperwork when delivers, after that it will be between you and the sender.

宅急便コンパクトコレクト just isn’t the safest way to purchase second-hand item, that why you should use Yahoo auction/mercari, the sender won’t get paid unless you confirmed the item is what you agreed on, I always film the unboxing process when purchasing expensive stuff.
