Is there something like a monthly ticket for trains/busses?

Good evening. In Germany we have something like a monthly paid contract for different regions to use busses and/or trains in said area. I wonder if there is something like that in Japan. I read a little bit about 定期券, but this is just a certain route you can pay for, right? I’m living in Shiga and I have to use either 京阪石坂泉 or JR, but probably both.
Any help or advice is appreciated.

  2. There’s tickets like the Tokyo Metro Pass (3 day unlimited rides on the Tokyo Metro) but because different rail lines and bus companies operate independently, you’re unlikely to find a region pass. But I’m obviously not familiar with all transit systems in the country.

The commuter passes (定期券) cover all stops between the origin and destination, so your home station, work station, and some in-between station to do your shopping is enough for most people. Perhaps one thing you’re missing is that companies pay for these commuter passes for their employees. So they’re going to want to only pay for the route to/from the workplace, which is why the system is designed around these passes.
