Hi; Really could use some help with my next trip this coming March/April. This will be my second time to Japan; we’re trying to stick a little more north (last summer did Kyushu, Shikoku and ‘golden route’).
Meeting my son and his GF (Digital nomads based in SEA). Last time to Japan we bounced around a lot in our 5 weeks there and we’re trying to slow travel a bit this trip, looking for base locations and doing some day trips ; hence the 3 – one week stays. Lots of tentative activities planned for each area but open to ideas for better base locations. Also really struggling with finding a good base for our 4th week. And open to any changes and help fine-tuning this rough itinerary.
3/22-29- Tokyo airbnb; revisiting some favorites and catching what we missed last time; Akihabara, Harajuku; Shinjuku and Asakusa (again) ; day trip to either Takaragawa Onsen, Kusatsu Onsen or possibly Nikko.
3/29-4/5 – Fuji region; found a 2 bedroom house in Odawara but open to a better base location. Or would Kamakura/Enoshima be more fun? Thinking better nightlife and ocean? Explore Fuji/ 5 lakes and Hakone areas. Day trips to Kamakura/Enoshima and Yokohama. Also the Kanamara Matsuri is going on in Kawasaki the week we are there… worth it? About 50 minute backtrack I think. We could easily catch the parade and spend the afternoon/evening in Yokohama. We could also do either Kamakura or Yokohama on our way down to Odawara from Tokyo; not sure which makes more sense.
4/5-6 One night Magome ryokan (Magome to Tsumago Nakasendo hike); then train from Nagiso to Kanazawa
4/6-13 Kanazawa. Tentative booking at Robot Hotel (good location) but still looking. Would prefer onsen facilities. Visit Tea and Geisha Districts, Kenrouk-en; Day trip to Shirakawa go. Day trip to Kago onsen town or Noto Peninsula ? Any other recommendations ?
4/13-15 – Takayama Matsuri Festival and Old Town. Hotel and Spa gift Takayama.
4/15-22 This is where I really need help! Maybe a good coastal location?? Was originally thinking heading to Nagano and on to Yamagata (Ginzan Onsen, Yumadera, Dewa Sanzen) but mid April thinking maybe still snow closures. Would still love to hike among the cedars in Nagano/Togakushi shrine. But we also would like to spend some time seeing coastal Japan. Kitayamazaki coast or Sendai? Is there a good location we could get to easily from Nagano and spend exploring the coast with enough to do for 5 -7 days? Love photography, hiking, onsen. Okay with a cool spot to just chill and hang out and visit too. Some remote work has to happen as well. Hoping to find a regional pass to keep train travel costs down. Thanks for any suggestions.
