Would an econometrics degree give me job opportunities in Japan?

I’m about to start college soon and i’m planning on studying econometrics so i can get a job in finance. It’s a stem degree and very math/statistics heavy.

My question is: Will a bacher/master degree in econometrics, or a bacher in econometrics and a master in quantitive finance or something similar, give me future job opportunities in Japan? Because it is my goal to eventually move and live there. Preferably having a job in finance in Japan, as opposed to teaching english.

Of course it is impossible for anyone to answer this question.
I read that there are a lot of job opportunities for people with a CS degree, or an engineering degree. But is there demand for a stem finance degree?

I just want to double check so that i don’t commit myself 100% to college and end up regretting my degree choice in the end.
Thank you.

  2. So you don’t want to commit to a degree unless it guarantees you a job in Japan? Your reasoning for getting higher education is wrong to begin with.

  3. You can get a job in Japan with any degree. The only thing that matter is: do you have marketable skills or not.

  4. If you’re good with math I’ve heard accounting is in demand in Japan since there’s a lot of businesses that operate in both countries

  5. Wanting to start a career here is great, but it really shouldn’t be a motivator at all for whatever degree you pick.

If you want a broad strokes idea though of how to get here, get through your under grad studies and see if you can do your masters in Japan, and be sure to get your JLPT N2 somewhere between all this.

There’s some great opportunities in the finance industry here, but they all require fluent Japanese so you really can’t skimp on the language study.

  6. IT and CS are the two major pathways at a decent career in Japan that doesn’t require business level Japanese. Although keep in mind the salaries for all of these positions, while more than good enough for living comfortably here, are notably lower than in western countries.
