If anyone know where to get a lot of fresh basil leaves cheap, please tell. The Mrs wants to make more pesto. She made some, 3 jars, gave 2 away, and they were super popular so she wants to make more!
You should grow some next year. These plants go nuts. I got tired of picking it.
Is growing your own an option at all?
Though I can understand it’s not the best if you need the basil now but I bought a tiny 50 yen starter and it completely ran out of control.
Grows very fast and requires little maintenance.
I use Tabechoku/食べチョク for bulk buying some veggies for sauce making, etc. I think they sell 1kg of basil for about 2500 yen. Turn around time is pretty quick too.
I grow 4 planters of basil every year to make pesto with. It’s fun! It’s past the season, now,of course, so see if you have a marketplace in your area that caters to Thai, Indian and other cuisines. My Indian neighbors go to buy tons of mint, coriander etc. I don’t know about basil, but I know it’s commonly used in Thai cooking so you may find it.
You can find fresh Basil online but it’s about 5,000 a kilo. I just did a cursory search, you may find a better deal somewhere.
Grow your own, it’s the best solution.
I 3D printed a hydroponic tower for my herbs with an USB water pump I got for 300yens on aliexpress.
With the seeds, sponges and baskets, it costs me ~3000yens to make and now I have a constant supply of basil (and other herbs), you should consider it if you want to reduce your costs.
I can print extra layers or a second tower at any time to scale up my production so it’s really convenient. If you know someone with a 3D printing I greatly recommend it, you can find free, ready to print, modular designs on printables.com
I bought small basil plants at Konan for ¥78 a few months ago.
