High pitch rooftop noise

There’s a high pitched whine coming from opposite our apartment and it’s driving me slightly crazy (see video). It tends to be particularly loud overnight and in the morning, and I’m wondering if anyone knows (a) what it might be — we suspect it’s the tank in the video, and (b) what we can do about it.

We’ll contact our real estate agent who will contact our management company who I suspect will do their best to do absolutely nothing, so any tips on magic words / who to contact / what to say to get someone to inspect the tank as a starting point would be much appreciated.

Edit: this has been happening since we moved in (about a year) – but louder and more consistent now.

  1. Sounds like a faulty ventilation fan, maybe in the elevator shaft.

The best place to start would be your building management or landlord who’ll try to contact the management of the building the noise is coming from. It may take a while because it’s a multi-step process, and since I doubt it surpasses regulatory noise levels I don’t think there are any magic words that would help aside from floating the idea that you might need to move out

  2. I just want to say how disappointed I am after watching the video to find out that you didn’t mean *that* kind of tank. You’d had my interest piqued.

  3. Watched the vid, and, yup, that would be pretty damn annoying. I imagine it can’t be much fun for the people living in that opposite building either. It could be getting louder as the bearings on whatever fan or pump it is get worse and worse. If you can find out the name of the management company of that building you could write or phone, complain about the noise and maybe also say you think it could be a fire risk. That might get their attention.

  4. I was about to say it sounds like you’re talking about the high frequency cat repellent but that doesn’t sound like it at all. I don’t think it would come through on a phone microphone
Most adults can’t hear it, but once in a while when I woke up on the right side of the bet and am extremely sharp, I can hear it.
