20 Day Itinerary Check For Tohoku Region in February

Hello, my girlfriend want to travel to the Tohoku region in February next year. This is our third time in Japan so we kind of want to explore somewhere we haven’t seen before, that’s how we landed on Tohoku. It’s a bit intimidating and difficult to plan as this area is more spread out and we will still mostly be relying on public transit. We considered renting a car but we aren’t sure about it yet. Maybe in Sendai?

Could you take a look at my rough itinerary and let me know if any changes you’d make / tips you have? Much appreciated!

* **Nikko (3 Nights)** – Kegon Falls, Nikko National Park, Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Rinno-ji Temple
* **Yamagata (4 nights)** – Ginzan Onsen, Zao Onsen Ski Resort, Yamadera day trip, The Three Mountains of Dewa
* **Sendai (4 nights)** – Geibeki gorge boat ride, Matsushima, Miyajima, Rissyakuji, Omoshiroyama Gorge
* **Akita (3 nights)** – Travel Day, Yokote Kamakura Snow Festival, Akita Aeon Mall, Akita Museum of Art, Lake Tazawa
* **Morioka (3 nights)** – Morioka Castle Ruins Park, Three great noodles of Morioka, Takumatsu pond
* **Tokyo (3 nights)** – Tokyo Disney, Eat food and relax

When we travel Japan we tend to like to base ourselves in the bigger cities and do day trips. But if there’s somewhere in this area you think would be better to stay than the big cities please make some suggestions. We also love Onsens but probably can’t afford to stay in the nice Onsen resorts, so if you know any good onsets for a day trip in this area please let me know!

Appreciate anyone that can share their thoughts, thanks you!

  1. I think this is solid, though IMO you’re overstaying about one night in each location. If you’re serious about the three mountains of dewa, you’ll definitely want to rent a car!
