Return Flight

The flight i booked home got cancelled and i found another flight that is much cheaper than the first flight. The thing is that I have already been refunded by the school for the cost of my ticket. Should I have to pay back the difference to my school? What do you guys think???

  1. The ethical thing to do is tell them and let them decide.

    The legal thing? Not sure.

  2. Up to you, but I mean at this point will it make a difference? Might be a headache in paperwork

  3. Thanks for your replies guys! I think that I’ll keep the extra money as I’ll have to pay residence tax and a bunch of other fees before leaving Japan and I will basically not get a final paycheck. To be honest, I don’t really feel guilty or any way in particular about it because it is inconsequential albeit a bit unethical. I am going to have to basically start over my life after having lived here for 5 years and I could use the extra money 🤑

  4. I believe, from what I understand from having just completed the flights part of my return trip, is that keeping the money is fraud and is illegal (not to mention a little unethical, if it was only a few yen cheaper then I’d probably say don’t worry, buy you said much cheap leading me to think upwards of 1000 yen)

I would strongly recommend that you talk to your BOE or Contracting Organization and discuss it with them. Please do not commit fraud. Sure the extra money is nice but I would recommend against anything illegal.

  5. Consider this: your new flight could be cancelled, and you might need to get something higher priced. I would wait until the entire thing is settled.

  6. Your boe/CO might ask for a copy of your boarding pass (ours requested it) after your supposed departure date as proof you took the flight.
Not sure what they would’ve done if someone never sent it.
