Self-sponsorship?

Currently under another SOR, signed a contract with a major Japanese music agency. My question is how does self-sponsorship work if I go to switch to the entertainer visa upon renewal?

I can’t use normal sponsorship because my contract actually gives me master recording rights for some of my productions which means I actually *own* some of what ends up being produced and it would be equivalent to freelance business income since I take home 100% (after sales fees, etc.).

Now if I negotiated another fee structure then maybe I’d be taking home 10% or so in that case and normal sponsorship could be used? I’m not sure. It’s a pretty niche situation.

Also, what are typical income thresholds to meet? I know technically it’s possible to “live” off 300,000 a month, but that’s not particularly difficult in my situation since ~2,000 iTunes Japan-only sales in a month would amount to over that for me.

Thanks for the advice.

  2. I’m not a lawyer, and you should definitely be discussing with one, but my expectation would be that you’d want to form a production company of some kind and then use that company to sponsor you; either as a business manager (since you’d be managing the production company) or as an entertainer.

But yeah, this is a pretty complicated situation so you’ll want to be discussing it with professionals.
