Drop in Seafood Prices?

I haven’t really paid attention but with the China embargo on Japanese seafood has anyone noticed anecdotally if seafood prices have dropped? I haven’t see price cuts at sushiya or seafood restaurants but I’m not paying that close attention.

  1. I usually choose scallop when buying furusato nozei, and the price has gone down by 1000 yen per 750g.

  2. Not really, they’re asking everyone to “please buy our stuff cos China bad” (but we’re not going to discount the price)

  3. Not answering the exact question but I’m enjoying grapes this year at prices far less jarring than in previous years.

  4. As I understand it, it is quite complicated. Seafood exports to China are mostly for processing and onward export to other markets (Europe, the U.S. and even Japan). China has large processing, packaging facilities that are certified by the FDA etc.. Japan does not have in the same scale.

The amount of fish Japan sends for direct use in Chinese restaurants is not that high.

China’s ban (theoretically at least) should increase the global price of processed fish products, but won’t have a huge impact on reducing certain local Japan unprocessed fish supply/ prices. They are essentially two different markets.

  5. I’ve heard that if a Chinese fishing vessel catches it, it’s considered Chinese fish regardless of where in the ocean it was caught. So I bet we’re gonna hear about a lot more Chinese ships sneaking into Japanese waters to catch “Chinese” fish

  6. Only if you live in the affected areas.

Also, it makes no sense for restaurants to also drop their prices. That’s not how businesses work. At most, you will only see some price drops in local stores.
