My company is sending me to the US, should I get my PR before going?

I will be eligible to apply for a PR status in Japan next year.

But at the same time, my company is expanding the business to the US and they want to send me there next year. This assignment is not permanent, after everything is setup (probably around 1-2 years), I will be sent back to Japan.

If I chose to go to the US, they will change my contract to the US one, which means that I will get US salary, but lose my Japanese work VISA. Which also means that I might need to start everything over again in order to get my PR.

What should I do? Should I wait until I get my PR and potentially give up my US work opportunity? Or should I go to the US and give up my PR application? Is there an alternative solution?

FYI: I am not a US citizen, so spending time working in the US would be a huge boost to my resume.

  1. Are you applying via the point system or you’ll need to wait another 10 years to get the PR? Do you plan to stay in Japan forever or it’s a temporary situation? Would you move to the US if the opportunity arose? Do they pay US salary plus accommodation and other perks? I would base my decision on these facts if I were you.

  2. If you have to wait until 2024/8 to submit your PR application then might as well take the US offer and apply for PR via HSP 80+ points route whenever you get back. After all, you only need 1 year with 80 points to apply.

  3. if you going for a point route and have confidence in your company – I vote for US. You will just have it in 1-3y after

  4. If you can apply under the HSP system upon your return, why not apply using that route now? IIRC, you don’t have to be on the HSP visa to apply for PR using it – you just have to show that you qualified for the last year with 80 points.

  5. Are we talking about a Tokyo resident here? If so the waiting time can be quite long.

If you live in the sticks and you have a non-Tokyo immigration office taking care of your PR, I hear stories it can take less than 3 months

  6. I’d go to the US. It’s a chance to get more experience, more benefits, future promotion in your corporation etc.
Getting a visa is easy in Japan for professionals. You can always apply for the fast track PR once you’re back.

  7. Have you ever been to the US? Damn even without PR on the table I’d have to have some offer of a lifetime to go there to live…

  8. More value in getting the PR than to risk your career and retirement plans in USA
