Halloween in tokyo

I’ll be in the Tokyo area withy girlfriend around Halloween and was wondering if anyone could shed some light about any Halloween events going on?
Obviously there’s Disney and Sanrio Puroland, but is there anything going on in the city on Halloween or the weekend before?
I know about the sort of block party in Shibuya, but since the mayor “cancelled” it, will people still be there? Should we still go?
Also will we be viewed and trashy tourist if we’re walking around in costumes that day since it seems like some of the events are discouraged?

  1. For Shibuya.. people will still be there. People are always there anyway, but no amount of discouragement is gonna prevent the Halloween craze. If the police shut down some blocks, people will just move to the next available ones. I’d advise you be cautious as there will be heavy crowding on public transport, little or no taxi availability, sidewalks will also be heavily crowded. Police will probably be spamming announcements over loudspeakers every few blocks to please keep moving / don’t drink outside /etc. Expect various media organizations to record or possibly interview you, for a story about how foreigners are being disorderly.

Honestly as someone who went through a similar experience, it’s not really fun. Everywhere is full, prices are raised, and the larger your group of friends, the harder it is to do anything or go anywhere. Even just going into a konbini nearby is going to be difficult between the near-zero stock of basic items like water/snacks, plus a potential ban on alcohol sales, and massive lines..

If you wanna walk around in costumes, I think you should go for it. People will probably look at you, but people do that on a normal day anyway.

As long as you’re responsible, safe, and follow basic rules (don’t throw your trash on the ground, vomit where people are moving through, etc..) I don’t really think it matters.

  2. there will still be ppl out there in costumes. i think there is a bit more emphasis for safety since the Itaewon crowd crush incident in Korea was also around halloween last year

  3. I heard that there will be a cosplay event in Ikebukuro but probably more otaku style costume than standard Halloween costume. As for Shibuya, don’t go because it’s really not that good. Just people drinking and trash everywhere.
