Thoughts on Private International Health Insurance?

I’m considering getting private internationsl health insurance coverage (Cigna, Aetna, etc.) to have in addition to National Health Insurance. Back in the day I remember some choosing it over NHI but, I’m pretty sure you can’t do that anymore…

Just wondering if anyone else has done this? Do you find it helpful and worth the additional cost?

Personally, I like the fact that it would allow me to see my doctor who knows my entire medical history, provide worldwide coverage, and even cover the 30% I have to pay here in Japan (which I admit is minimal and very affordable.)

  1. Likely isn’t worth the cost unless your employer is paying for it. You’ll be paying thousands of dollars and get back just 30% off fairly low amounts to start with.
