Student Moving To Japan – Electric/ Gas Contract Appointment Question

Hi everyone,

Later this month I’m moving to Japan for studying abroad from September. I’ve gotten a small apartment in my city and have a few questions about moving if anyone has had experience with it. 🙂

My landlord has said that they have booked appointments for electricity and gas staff to visit my house the day after I arrive, so that I can sign the gas/ electricity contracts. However, I’m a little worried about this since I’m still not great at Japanese (I’m maybe almost N4). I was wondering if I’ll need to have good Japanese to sign the contract, or if it’ll be as simple as giving my signature at the door.

They’ve also said that it’s fine for me to pay with cash, I was wondering if this is normal or not in Japan. I trust them however, I was thinking it could be because they know I won’t have a Japanese bank account when I arrive.

Thanks very much!

You’ll probably be fine. Use Google Lens to translate if unsure. It’s better to have someone with you that speaks Japanese, just in case, but it shouldn’t be that complicated.

I suppose they will send you a bill, that you can pay with cash at a convenience store. That is very normal. If there is no bill, and just cash, it would not be normal, but it may happen.
