I’ve never been ID’ed let alone asked for my passport when travelling domestically by air.
You should be fine because it’s domestic. Never once showed my passport domestically.
I have never had to show id, let alone a passport when flying domestically. You should be fine.
Passports are needed for going in and out of countries.
This is why people who never travel abroad don’t have one.
Or why it’s such a big deal that Americans and Canadians don’t need them to travel between their countries.
You don’t need your passport to fly domestic.
You’ll be ok. Flying domestically, I’ve never even needed to show ID here
You’ll be fine. They didn’t check my ID AND my girlfriend spelt my name wrong when entering my details onto the website.
It’s basically like catching a bus, but with extra steps.
100% do not need passport for domestic flight. Also for hotel.
I mean, a domestic flight should require a regular govt ID, not strictly a passport
Need more info. You live in Japan and have your gaijin card with you, or a Japanese drivers license? If yes, these are sufficient forms of ID for resident foreigners and you should carry at least your gaijin card with you at all times.
If no, and you’re a tourist, firstly this is the wrong sub for your question, and secondly you’re supposed to carry your passport with you at all times as ID.
HOWEVER, for most domestic flights if you have only carry-on and are not checking any luggage at the airport, then just get your digital boarding pass downloaded to your phone/Apple wallet in advance with the QR code, scan this at the machine at security and stroll on through.
You will be ID’d at any check-in counter, for sure.
But you will not be ID’d at security (unless you turn up drunk and disorderly lol).
So check in online in advance and just use the QR code to pass through security directly.
Keeping a photo of your passport (and relevant visa sticker pages) on your phone is a good idea as well, but personally, my passport never ever leaves my house unless I’m going OS, renewing my visa, or renewing my international driving permit for driving whilst OS.
My gaijin card and Japanese driver’s license live in my wallet. I never ever show my gaijin card as ID unless absolutely necessary like doing something at the Ward office. Whenever asked for ID for other matters like checking into a hotel, I always present only my driver’s license, the same as a local would.
Use your 在留. Shouldn’t even be checked
I’ve never actually taken my passport on a domestic flight. Why risk losing it?
Short answer, yes if you have your Zairyu card.
Long answer, still yes, as they’ll probably let you on anyway if they ask and you explain.
Addendum: they most likely won’t even ask anyway. They are real lax on domestic travel here.
Inside Japan any photo ID works. Passport unnecessary.
Preferably residence card, but driving licence etc. is also fine.
Just have your reservation/online check in document ready and you are fine. (Digital also ok)
I often fly inside Japan for business, and the (printed) pdf is always enough (on the phone/tablet also ok).
May I recommend the commenters here “r/passportporn”?
It all off topic.
Question was about passport inside Japan flight.
Answer is: no problem, you don’t need.
Done.
Never needed to show any form of ID when taking domestic flights. All you need is your boarding pass barcode on your smartphone (provided you checked in online) when you drop baggage and go through security check. Thats it.
Should be good mate. You don’t need anything apart from a ticket to fly domestic.
You should keep ID on you at all times tho as it’s a legal requirement for all foreign residents and tourists. Very rarely the police might stop you. I’ve been checked 5 times in about 15 years of living here.
Your resident card should be enough.
