I’m seeing that if you don’t have Mastercard/Amex, you can load a Suica with cash at the station. I just tried that but i’m unable to add cash because the Suica isn’t properly installed on my iphone. i can’t properly install it because it forces me to put in some money via credit card before it gets established on my phone. anyone know if i’m doing something wrong??

Get a commuter pass/定期券 the machines will still print those for you.
You can fill them up with cash like a normal card.
Suica doesn’t allow it, but you can make a PASMO card without charging any money on iPhone as long as you use the PASMO app to make it rather than the wallet app. Specific instructions are on PASMO’s homepage. See a lot of misinformation here lately so thought it was worth clearing up.
