Living in Osaka for 1 year, how should I get a fridge?

Hey there!

Have an unfurnished apartment lined up for a 1-year stay in Osaka on a WHV. The lack of furniture will be a fun thing to tackle, with second-hand shops and cheap Ikea purchases, but the fridge (and maybe microwave) is where I’m lost.

Absolutely no idea if rentals are possible, but as I’m only here for 12 months I don’t really want to spend a ton on appliances, especially if it’s difficult to offload them when I leave.

Anyone have trouble selling appliances in the past, and is it worth buying used from Facebook marketplace or some equivalent?

Thanks for the help!

  2. Is Craig’s list still a thing in Japan? I remember 10+ years ago we would search for things like this through Sayonara Sales (sales from other foreigners leaving Japan).

  3. I went to a second hand store and bought a 130L fridge for probably around 15,000 and it was in good condition. I used it for two years, called the second hand company back and told them I wanted to get rid of it. They came and inspected, picked it up, and paid me about 2000 yen for it.

I’m sure you can find something similar in Osaka.

  4. I would ask the rental agency first if they can arrange for something, if not, find a HardOff (used household items and appliances) and when you move, sell it back to HardOff. best of luck and i’m jealous:) https://www.hardoff.info

  5. renting can be an option for less headache.. not sure if they have a 1 year plan.

buying second hand can be troublesome since usually sellers don’t provide transport and installation. if you are not careful you can scratch your flooring and an additional hundred of thousands yen for repair.

selling second hand can be a headache for the same reason and also you might find it difficult to sell if you insist on getting the maximum return.

I have been in japan since 2017 and am currently renting appliances for the above reasons.

  6. As others said, Craigslist or jimoty are good. There’s also the Facebook group mottanai to get stuff from sayonara sales, among many others 🙂

  7. If you’re staying a year, you need a fridge … you can get a used one for under 20, 000 and some recycle shops deliver

  8. I got ALL my furniture for free from ジモティー

I then hired a guy from Osaka sayonara sales to pick up and move it for me for 10k.

    Check it out.

  9. Not sure if there’s something similar near you, but I recently saw a YT video of a thrift store in Tokyo where they also had a bunch of home appliances!

And if that fails, maybe ask around your friend group/colleagues if they know of anyone who has an old (but working) fridge they want to get rid of!
