Apply for pension lump sum through agency

Hi everyone, just like title says has anyone applied pension lump sum through an agency so they can do all the work and you just have to submit the documents to them?

My supervisor seems to be a bit confused with this part so I don’t mind to go through an agency. But I’m not sure if they are legit.

Otherwise, I might have to ask her to do help me with it.

Thank you!

  1. There isn’t much you need to do. Just fill out some paperwork. If your supervisor is confused find the JET handbook page on the pension lump sum payment. On the right hand page will be English and the left side will be Japanese instructions.

  2. I’m not sure how much the agency charges you, but if you’re able to pay a friend/colleague to do it that’s an option. It isn’t really too hard if your tax rep knows what to do.

I don’t go out of my way to do it for the local ALTs but when asked, I’ve done it for a ¥10,000 fee since I have to use my paid leave to go during a weekday / pay fees to send them the money. If you have someone you can pay a little / ask it would be easier maybe

  3. You don’t need an agency to claim the lump sum (80%). The paperwork is in English and the instructions are very clear. You can use an agency to serve as your tax representative – the person who has to file a tax return on your behalf (after you receive the lump sum) in order to claim the remaining 20%.
