Hello! I’ve been in Japan for the first time for six months as a student. So I’m kind of new here but I went to Donki today (in Shibuya) and saw they had a lot of Chucky merchandise. I was wondering if out of all the Western horror movie characters is Chucky more popular?

I was in a yakiniku place in miyakojima and they had the normal signed photos of celebs, special menu items, and beer adverts on the walls. And 3 or 4 life sized chucky dolls.
Can’t answer your question but I found that kinda strange lol.
Kids at my senior high have Chucky pencil cases and I’m 100% sure they’ve never seen the films. Its probably a cult hit here considering the weirdness of it, and its just persisted through. Same with Gremlins. Japanese people do love their tokusatsu.
When the original movies came out, they were quite popular. Also you might know that a new TV series has been created in the US. It’s showing on Hulu Japan
I did ask one of my students if she’d seen it (she had Chucky merch), and she said yes, so maybe?
It’s popular during Halloween at USJ. They usually have a Chucky haunted house.
