For some reason, Japanese novels come with a detachable cover and it make the thing pretty uncomfortable to hold. Do most people keep it on when reading.
Side note: I just picked a random book off the shelf for fun. The cover says “蔭桔梗(kageki kiyou” and “泡坂妻夫(awasaka tsumao)” on it. If anyone’s read this book, is it good?

If it’s your book … then do whatever you want
If it’s someone else’s or from a library, then I suggest putting up with the discomfort so that you can return it in the original condition.

You mean a dust jacket? That’s not exclusive to Japanese books. If it’s your book you can do whatever you like.
do you want to keep it or not? they’re fairly common even outside of Japan, I generally take them off and put them back on when I’ve finished reading, they’re pretty handy when you don’t have a bookmark with you as you can use the cover’s wings to keep the page
I remove the dust jacket but cover my books with contact paper – the covers are weaker than I’d like.
I don’t use it when I’m reading, I don’t see the point. I just put it back when the book returns to the shelf 🤷🏻♂️
I have a nice leather book cover I put on.
I once swapped some to pretend I was reading another book than the one I was actually reading. Then I understood it was probably their primary purpose :>
