What plant gives off incredible scent in Kyoto Imperial Palace?

I visited the interior of the palace today and I couldn’t quite pinpoint which plant it was. I have a feeling it was a tree with yellow flowers but I can’t be sure.

I’ve noticed it walking around Kyoto as well.

Any ideas?

  1. Kinmokusei! It’s in the osmanthus family, the more common form is a deciduous evergreen shrub with little orange flowers but it comes in white too.

  2. It’s amazing, isn’t it? Such an amazing smell that I just assumed I was smelling some kind of perfume or air freshener when I first encountered it.
