IKEA return and charges

So I’m not sure if this is how IKEA works or it’s the language barrier that’s fucking me.

I bought a bed frame, mattress and duvet from IKEA for total of 79,527円.

Total including Tax. ¥ 79,527

My bedroom is 3.5 tatami mats so obviously the semi- double MALM frame doesn’t fit.

My bad, I should’ve measured it before.

So I called them to arrange a return and I’ll order HEMNES bed as it’s more compact.

Now, finding an English speaker was a hassle and they contacted me after 3 days.

And they explained that I’ll only get 64,027 as refund because they won’t give back 5,500 as the delivery is already done.

And they will also charge 4,500 for picking up the return but somehow the math seems way off.

Can someone please explain to me how this works?

  1. Your itemized list makes no sense, where are you getting this from?

    >Provided services. ¥ 9,350

  2. I don’t think it’s strange that you only get the price of the actual product back (inclusive of tax), and not the services (delivery and assembly) if you’re returning a product purely due to your own mistake.

I actually think it’s generous as they need to take it back and they cannot sell it as a new product anymore because it’s assembled. That’s just me though.

  3. Yeah the delivery service isn’t going to be refunded for your mistake. That guy had to come out there regardless of your mistake and should be compensated.

Most online retailers outside of like amazon also won’t refund shipping (and sometimes make you pay for the return shipping) if the item is being returned due to buyers remorse or any other reason not the fault of the seller i.e. didn’t properly measure for something as important as furniture to make sure it fit.

You’re lucky they don’t charge you a restock fee ontop of that since a lot of warehouses do. You’re only being charged for the delivery (that happened) and the pickup (if you choose to have it picked up). That’s more than fair.

Cut the losses for the service amount and pay for the return or keep the item and not pay the 4,500 to pick up the bed and deal with it yourself.

  4. Be glad you got a refund, last time I asked they told me they would only give me store credit. I was looking to buy a queen mattress topper

  5. Why are you spending nearly 8man on a bed anyway? I think I got my double bed off Amazon for 2man? Another 1man for the double size futon to put on top of the matress (Because thats how people do it here)
