US SIM card in Japanese Android phone

Does anyone have recommendations for American sim card/networks that work with Japan model Android phones (Galaxy S22 Ultra to be specific)?
I’ll be heading to America for a visit and was hoping to just swap sim cards, but my previous experience with a T Mobile sim was that it didn’t work.
I’m looking online and I saw that if your device passes the Verizon bring your own device test on their site it should work, but after previously passing a similar test for T Mobile, I don’t have much trust for this actually working.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  1. I’ve used t-mobile tourist sims that are sold on amazon.jp few years ago and they worked fine in S20. Don’t see why it wouldn’t work in S22. You’d need to add APN settings etc most likely.

But these days there are probably cheaper/easier to get esim deals, check esimdb.

  2. Where did you purchase your cell phoneWhere was your phone purchased? There is a possibility that the SIM lock has not been removed.

Smartphones purchased from Japanese mobile carriers (example: Softbank, au, dokomo) have a SIM lock, which prevents the use of SIMs from other companies. Especially in the case of installment payments, this feature is always active.

In order to unlock the phone, it is necessary to unlock the phone while the installment payment for the phone has been completed.

The procedure for unlocking varies from carrier to carrier. In most cases, it is necessary to go to the subscriber’s website or to the store counter to complete the procedure. The latter requires a fee, so it is recommended that you do it yourself.

You may have a little trouble with this procedure, since you will probably only be able to find Japanese-language literature on the subject.

  3. If it’s a week I just roam on ahamo data. If it’s a month I use gig sky and eSIM as a second line for data.

There are better options than buying in swapping SIM cards at the airport
