  1. How frequent are earthquakes felt in Tokyo? I’ve been here for months, living very close to shinjuku, and felt nothing. I was led to believe before moving they are felt very frequently

  2. To anyone that’s applied for the Amazon Mastercard, what paperwork did you need to prepare? Did you need a My Number card?

  3. Best option to buy a medium size kotatsu that ships directly to Canada? Amazon only has small ones left.

  4. Does anyone have experience with those Panasonic shops that are all over the place? I found one nearby and they had a sign in the window saying that they can fix basically anything. I’m wondering if it would be possible to have them repair my Cassette Walkman. Do they only repair Panasonic branded electronics?

  5. Going up to Hokkaido in early November. How snowy will it be? Realized I don’t own anything footwear-wise that’ll stand up to heavy snow.

  6. My wife and I have jumped the gun a bit on buying a condo, and I need to get my PR in hand before some time in December for the loan.

Now, I applied the first week of February in Chiba (10 years residence + 3 years married), and called immigration and they say they’re reviewing it now. But naturally they won’t give me a solid date. I fully expect there won’t be an issue getting it on time, but my wife is a worried mess.

Can anyone who got a PR recently in Tokyo area share your timeline here to help assuage our worries?

  7. Can pocket wifis rented in Japan work overseas?

Going to america with everyone in a few months, and we probably need pocket wifis just to keep in touch. Can we use some rental ones from japan to bring to america?

  8. One more question: anyone a club jetstar member? This will be my fourth time flying with them this year, starting to wonder if it’d be worth it to join.

  9. For Christmas, I want to have my wife do a photoshoot in a yukata or something. Does anybody have any suggestions for photo places (either national chains or places around Hiroshima) that you’ve had good experiences with?

  10. Asked in Jfinance but no answer yet, so asking here as well

New to Wise. Hoping to mainly use it for cutting down on fees when I have business trips overseas.

If I’m not trying to make any bets on foreign exchange, am I correct that it doesn’t matter which currency I hold the funds in when I use the card overseas?

    example- going to Canada soon.
    1. Keep in Wise in Yen, use credit card in Canada. Fees will be applied on each transaction
    2. Change say $1000 to CAD, then use credit card in Canada. Fees will be applied only on the currencty transfer

My understanding is that the rate of the fees will be the same, so it is better to go with option 1, so that I don’t lose on exchanging back the unused amount to JPY later, is that correct?

  11. So I’m graduating next year. I’d like to take some graduation pictures outside under the Sakura this coming spring.

Does anyone know any photographers that would do that? In Osaka.

  12. I ordered a little toy figure off Mercari that was supposed to come with a little accessory and didn’t (mini rubber ducky in a floaty tube). I want to let them know and ask if they could send it, but my Japanese is still pretty crap…

For this I’m definitely gonna want to use the proper keigo right? So DeepL/Google Translate probably won’t cut it; does anyone have a copypaste I could use?

Edit: nevermind official product photos (that they used) were just very misleading, so not really their fault. All the other ones come with anything detached and in focus in the photo, but this one you can see a corner of the ducky in another photo so it’s just a very misleading prop… https://www.popmart.co.jp/?pid=162753142
Dang, sad days; got it as a gift for someone with a main special interest in rubber duckies and only a secondary interest in bubbles XP the thing is way less appropriate without the duck.

  13. Is there a way I add my student commuter pass to my android and tap my phone instead of the card? Not a huge deal to tap card just curious.

  14. When they have these all-city PayPay 20% off campaigns, who foots the bill? Are shops losing the full 20%, or does PayPay refund some percent?

  15. Ciao ciao! Been here on a student visa for 2 weeks. There are 2 prices when buying something, right? So let’s say a chocolate is 100 yen, and under it is something around 115 yen. So what does that mean? I have another question below.

I bought gel from a drug store some days ago and when I checked the price, it was 470 something yen. But when I had to pay it, the cashier showed 500 something yen. I just paid it and went my way, since I know I paid the bottom price and I just didn’t have the energy to talk in japanese. Yesterday I bought things at donki and the price was at 5000 yen. I opened my wallet to get cash and the cashier saw my passport and wanted to see it but I just showed my residence card and she said along the lines of “ooh okay okay thank you for showing!” And then she did something with the computer and the price went from 5k something to 4k something. Earlier, I went to a supermarket and when I got to the cashier to pay, I showed my residence card and the cashier said that there’s no need and the things I bought got charged the top price.

So my questions for this one are, how do I handle transactions? Do I always present my residence card before paying? Do I say “zairyu kado wa irimasuka” before paying? That is all. Sorry for the long post lmao I just want to be able to save money of course, even if it’s a 15 yen difference.
