Taxi hire with luggage space

My husband and I will be flying into Haneda and staying (initially) in Mitaka. We’ve looked into options for luggage shipping from the airport but ultimately will probably be taking it with us – individually it seems like a cheap option, but with 4 large suitcases between us it started adding up!

Currently we’re discussing taking the airport limousine bus to Kichijouji then taking a taxi the rest of the way to our accommodation. Is it possible to flag down a taxi with space for 4 large + 2 small suitcases? Would downloading a taxi app (that works with foreign Androids) help?

Alternatively, we’re open to taking a regular bus from Kichijouji instead of a taxi but we don’t want to bother people with our suitcases. Or if anyone has any suggestions for reasonably priced luggage-bearing taxi services directly from Haneda, I’m all ears!

You’d be better off just dragging your luggage to the taxi stand. If taxi’s are in the area (and I have to believe there would be plenty of them around) that is where they’d be waiting for fares.

As for whether or not there will be space for that much luggage… There are wagon style taxis that could probably do the job, and they are becoming more and more common. But the sedan style taxis would probably only have space for two of the big suitcases in the trunk and maybe you could squeeze a third into the passenger area.

Would you consider shipping two of the big suitcases so that you’d only have the two big ones and two small ones to schlep around yourself?

Nihonkotsu (the 900lbs gorilla in the taxi space here) does a flatrate from Haneda service. To Suginami city you’re looking at around 10,000yen – https://www.nihon-kotsu-taxi.jp/service/flat-rate/haneda.php

  3. Since I had difficulty flagging down a wagon taxi in a similar situation about a month back, I ended up going with Uber; you can select a wagon type from the app and it was nice to know the price in advance. The driver did not speak Japanese but it was a very good service.

  4. You can use Takyubin from the airport to send your luggage directly to your place. It will arrive the next day. Look for the Yamato company when you arrive at haneda. Their logo is a styalized cat carrying a kitten. Google it for more details. It should not cost a huge amount.
