Hi everyone, im Vietnamese and studying in Japan now. My relatives in America is trying to send money through bank for me and they ask me whats my routing number for my bank. I ask the bank and they told me to use SWIFT only but my relatives said they need that routing number.

Has anyone here received money from the US through SMBC bank please tell me how to do it. Thank you so much guys!

  1. There is no routing number. They DO need to use SWIFT, or better yet, if it’s not a very big amount, you should register for transferwise, and move the money that way.

When sending, usually the branch number will be prepended to the account number, so if you’re at denenchofu branch for example, your branch code is 237 (source: https://ml.its-mo.com/p/en/smbcbank/dtl/2501120300237/?&cond1=1&&his=sa%2Csa1) so your account for SWIFT would be 237-XXXXXXX.

  2. ABA routing numbers are an American system. ABA is an acronym for American Banking system. It is usually not supported outside the US.

SWIFT codes is a global system. In my experience US banks support both ABA and SWIFT. All the banks I used have a separate process for international transfers which asks for SWIFT instead of ABA.

Tell your parents to make sure they selected international transfer and if they have any difficulty to call their bank’s support line.

  3. My US bank got the number from a SMBC branch in New York cause no one at the SMBC branch in Kobe knew or understood what it was ..

  4. Your relatives might also be using a bank too small to be directly linked into SWIFT. In that case, you might need to use a third party service. Revolut is better for small amounts (can send up to $1000 a month completely fee-free), Wise for larger amounts.
