What is this sushi? Why is it the spicyest thing I’ve ever eaten for only 10 seconds?

I’m at a restaurant with no English speaking staff. This is a squid roll of some sort that came in a squid plate.
What’s unique is it was overwhelming spicy, eyes almost watering, sinuses clearing, but it passed incredibly quickly, like 15 seconds. No more fire. I’d love to know what this is so I can order again

  1. I just want to add I’m very comfortable eating very spicy food. Think thai food for Thai people. This went 0-100 on me.

  2. The green stuff is Kizami Wasabi. As in actual wasabi, not the fake shit. Kizami Wasabi is chopped wasabi root marinated in soy sauce.

  3. The green stuff looks like real deal wasabi. It gives me that sensation of holy shit spicy, suddenly clear sinuses, then gone without a trace

  4. It is tako wasabi. It’s usually eaten as like a side dish w/o the gunkan maki style. :o)

If you want to try it or get more, you can get it at the Japanese market either near the pickled section or the fish section in little containers. It’s for sure yummy. 🙂

  5. I just want to clear something up about this being “real wasabi”. While that’s accurate it still isn’t the REAL real wasabi. It’s close but this is a pickled version and fresh wasabi is entirely different and the flavor is more preserved by the pickling process. Actual ground wasabi rhizome has a bit of a different flavor. There is one small producer close to me that I’m trying to get some fresh. This pickled version is far better than the green paste, but not as good as fresh ground root.

  6. OP sounds like a druggie whenever they praise the wasabi sensations lol. “It feels like being kicked by a mule. I want more”

  7. Ah yes. Tako Wasabi. I always start out with a round of cold beers and an order of Tako Wasabi. I love introducing to new people and watching their reactions

  8. Op. If you’re in a Japanese speaking restraunt ask “kore wa nan desuka?” (I think I’m remembering right) and point at one of the green bits and I’m sure they will they and show you what it is

  9. Squid. Notice the black dots on the cut up tentacles.

And probably green onion and wasabi added.
