Tamago… does this look right?

Based on advice from another thread, I ordered tamago at a new sushi place.

I got what’s pictured. I’m a little confused… Isn’t this supposed to be rolled? It’s just a block of egg afaict.

I’m new to sushi and not really clear on what some of these dishes are supposed to be.

  1. They’re just serving the premade frozen stuff. It’s pretty ubiquitous. Only high end sushi restaurants take the time to make their own tamago.

Sometimes a lack of rolling indicates baked, but that’s not the case here.

  2. Yeah that’s probably the frozen stuff. I know a lot of chefs that just buy that because it’s just easier and nobody seems to care if they take the time to make it themselves. Basically not worth the effort for them

  3. Yes it’s cooked in a square deep pan that creates a block of a mixture of egg soy sauce and other stuff

  4. As others have said, you’re right. This is the premade/frozen one. A lot of places do this since tamago becomes a pain in the ass to do normally if you’re selling a high volume. If you’re new to sushi I wouldn’t judge tamago based on this piece alone, done right its in a whole different ballpark and one of my favorites.

  5. Rolled? For someone so new to sushi you sure seem to know exactly how everything should be prepared. How was their spicy tuna?

  6. Everyone, don’t even bother commenting telling him its right the way it is

This guy is just a massive troll and will argue for hours on end about what he thinks tamago should be and won’t accept anyone’s answers

He did this for spicy tuna rolls, now he’s doing it for tamago

Save yourself your time and sanity and just ignore the post and move on
