Has anyone tried the Meat Guy in Japan?

Has anyone tried the Meat Guy? I keep seeing advertisements for something or other. I was wondering if it is worth it. Any thoughts?

  1. Meat Guy is great, there’s other testimonials about them on this subreddit. They’re pricey, but they get stuff that you usually can’t get in most grocery stores. I’ve done group orders in the past to save on shipping.

  2. I order from them often if you ¥1man then your delivery is free. You occasionally get ¥500 off. I get different things during really good deals. T-bone steak was half off last year, filet steaks were knocked down a bit, you can get duck(yum), ostrich(yuck), kangaroo(yum), and other things.

You can make an order months in advance too, for example there’s a deal you want today, but don’t want it yet. Order it then and there for December 10th. You’ll get the discount and it’ll arrive on the day you choose. The only downside is that the pita bread and spices were frozen also so the spices were useless when thawed.

  3. I would say they are *good*. During COVID and until recently they seemed to have trouble keeping all the stuff I was after in stock and their sausages have been pretty disappointing in my opinion.

I never tried their premium steaks or exotic meats though, so YMMV.

  4. They’re okay. You can get stuff that you can’t easily find in normal supermarkets, for a price.

  5. I’ve ordered half a pig and a crocodile claw. Both were pretty good but a little pricey.

  6. > Meat Guy in Japan?

The “Meat Guy” is not the ***real*** Meat Guy. About three years ago, the *real* Meat Guy ^{who ^was ^Australian} got divorced from his Japanese spouse and lost his business.

The current “Meat Guy” is a just a farquing Japanese company with semi-Japanese prices. The real Meat Guy had horrific Japanese prices that seem to be to have been “acceptable” to Aussies—^【very, ^very ^weird】 }.

Basically from a dual-national, American/Japanese perspective, the current or past “Meat Guy” was/is only good for meat items unavailable at remotely reasonable prices such as meat pies and Italian sausage.

    __________

    *Meta Question…*

Do you folks from Down Under consider the Meat Guy’s prices acceptable ^【very, ^very ^weird】 ? From an American’s perceptive, the prices seem 40% too high.

  7. I buy a beef joint from them every Christmas. It’s good quality meat. A little pricey, but it can be difficult to find stuff like that elsewhere.

  8. I bought from him before the change to the new meat guy, but it was a great experience for me. A whole smoked turkey for a Thanksgiving dinner with friends, well worth it to me.

  9. Prices have gone up a lot over the past 5 years but their service is excellent. Never been disappointed and the first time I ordered they gave me extra big pieces of roo meat. Buying when there’s specials or buying in bulk is the best value for cash.

  10. If I recall, the original meat guy’s extended family owned a farm in his home country and that was where all the meat came from, and they would make their sausages in house as well.

But this was 10 years ago and as other commenters have noted, the current meat guy may not be the same guy. Looking at the website, I can’t see the original guy in the staff picture (I actually met the original meat guy a few times)

  11. I’ve never bought directly from them , but I’ve gotten meat from them as a gift several times. (Very kind friends.)

The quality is always good and they usually have a good variety of meat. If you want some nice steaks or lamb, I’d say give them a try.

  12. Last year because of bird flu I didn’t use it but generally every year I get my turkeys there. Have occasionally gotten other things. Quality is good prices are high but fair all things considered

  13. It’s good but you’re going to pay for it. If it’s something you want and can’t find anywhere else, they kinda have that market covered. I usually shop around first but if it’s really specific it might be the only place you can get it

  14. Used to be good before the “buyout”. The sausages were great, but the quality fell a lot. I prefer horizon farms now, they are also pricey but the quality is high.

  15. They often have different sales (e.g., currently 20% off all steaks) plus free shipping for orders over 10,000 yen. I feel most of their products aren’t worth it at regular prices.

But recently even some sale items seem much pricier than before (hello, inflation) so I stopped buying from them. Nowadays I just buy from my local grocery store. The prices are similar and I don’t have to buy at least 1万 worth each time to avoid the shipping charges.

  16. Thank you for all the info. From what I’ve read, I should check out MegaMeatMart (thought that was made up until I searched for it) and Horizon Farms and Whole Meat – and if only good sale is available at TheMeatGuy.

  17. It’s a useless service for people who want to waste money buying meat online just because they can’t be bothered to read Japanese labels in supermarkets.

Sending frozen boxes by mail is very expensive (think ¥2000+ per box). It would be impossible to get a good deal on an online meat store for that reason alone.

  18. I’ve ordered about 20 times over the last 10 years. My lamb sausages tasted like mutton this last order and the pricing is a bit high these days so I’m kinda staying away for the time.

  19. Good quality meat, but expensive AF if it’s not a sale. Honestly speaking, I prefer Costco for my meats. Good quality and doesn’t cost me my first born.

  20. I used to order from the site about monthly, but between shrinkflation and price increases a lot of what I ordered is about 40% more expensive than it used to be. It was already expensive so I only order when there is a decent sale or there is something I really want.

Been using carnivoro.shop for my steak cravings.

  21. Super helpful thread, thanks! Any clues on where I can get beef shin cuts (osso buco) with bone marrow, cartilage, and fat?

  22. Expensive but worth it. Spent ¥15,000 one summer and gave the japanese family a massive bbq feast they still talk about
