What’s the difference here?

My garbage separation doesn’t make sense to me. I have プリン、 たまご、 弁当などの as burnable but also トレー in recyable. Aren’t they the exact same? I never know what to do with my konbini trays tbh. Any help is appreciated

  1. If it has a プラ symbol on it, then it is recyclable as plastic, but it should be washed out if/when you do so.

My ward has a smartphone app for helping figure out waste separation with FAQs for different kinds of items, which I find really helpful. Maybe see if your municipality has something similar.

  2. Don’t think about too much. They will all be mixed at the end of the day anyway. They all get burned.

  3. トレー probably means Styrofoam (polystyrene) trays. The トレー refers to the material, not the form.

  4. Nope, プリン、 たまご、 弁当などの is made of hard plastic and marked プラ but trays (as from meat/fish you buy at your local supermarket) are made from soft polystyrene.

The rule of a thumb here is if you can pierce it with a toothpick then it’s probably polystyrene.
