For various reasons, it would be convenient to have a U.S. mobile number to make and receive calls and send and receive texts (ideally for free). Google voice doesnt work in Japan. There are some alternatives, but I’d like to hear what others have experienced. TIA.

It provides you a US mobile number and charges a reasonable amount for calls and texts:

Google voice does work in Japan. I use it to call my dad every couple of weeks as well as a few other things I need an actual US phone number for.
T-mobile works fine.
